Michigan’s #1 Chess School for Children & Young Adults

Shatranj Dhi, meaning The Science of Chess in the ancient language of Sanskrit, is a full-service, in-person Chess School headquartered in Novi, Michigan. Shatranj Dhi has been operational since 2017. This school primarily serves children and young adults who aspire to pursue chess either as a hobby or professionally. Adults & seniors interested in playing chess over the board are welcome to join, too. The chess club gathers at 4PM (EST) to play, practice, discuss, and learn informally, share info about tournaments , coaches, other chess events and network with chess aspirants.
Student-Focused Curriculum
Our program is taught by qualified FIDE-rated coaches who are not only technically skilled in the game of chess but are trained to work with children of all ages and ability levels, offering puzzles, challenges, and learning opportunities that fit each student’s unique needs. Our inclusive model welcomes students who have special needs (e.g., ADHD, autism, sensory impairments, etc.) and of all backgrounds.
Private + Group Lessons
Shatranj Dhi offers in-person 1:1 lessons as well as group lessons. Private lessons offer a unique chance for individualized, one-on-one instruction with our team of instructors, begining with an initial assessment to determine the player’s strengths and weaknesses and allowing the instructor to design a customized learning roadmap tailored to the player’s specific needs. Group lessons offer the unique benefit of learning through coached play, building technical knowledge, good sportsmanship, friendships, and team spirit. This environment simulates tournament conditions, preparing students for the mental and physical aspects of competitive chess in ways that 1-on-1 lessons cannot.
Chess Club
Students are invited to join us for Chess Club, held from 4-8 PM on scheduled weekdays, for up to four hours of practice with peers. Coaches are present to match opponents based on skill level and offer teachable moments through gameplay. This is an essential and fantastic opportunity for students to apply knowledge gained from lessons. Chess Club also provides a chance for players to socialize, make friends, and experience various playing styles, all while having fun in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Tournaments & Events
Shatranj Dhi organizes and participates in several tournaments and special events year-round. Tournament coaching, preparation, and chaperoning is offered to all members of Shatranj Dhi Chess School.
